Investment banking involves providing financing services for corporations, helping them raise money for example, or advising and helping with takeovers and mergers. This kind of stuff involves the primary market in stocks and bonds - new issuance. It involves the bankers speaking directly with the companies and trying to find solutions to their problems. Or more cynically, trying to invent problems so that they can charge them for finding solutions to the problems.
