Yes deep is right,
the above group was once known as the "Big Eight", and was reduced to the "Big Five" by a series of mergers. The Big Five became the Big Four after the near-demise of Arthur Andersen in 2002, following its involvement in the Enron Scandal.

Even none of the Big Four accounting firms is a single firm. Each is a network of firms, owned and managed independently, which have entered into agreements with other member firms in the network to share a common name, brand and quality standards. Each network has established an entity to co-ordinate the activities of the network. In two cases (KPMG and Deloitte Touche Tomatsu), the co-ordinating entity is Swiss, and in two cases (PricewaterhouseCoopers and Ernst & Young) the co-ordinating entity is a UK limited company. Those entities do not themselves practise accountancy, and do not own or control the member firms.
In most cases each member firm practises in a single country, and is structured to comply with the regulatory environment in that country. However, in 2007 KPMG announced a merger of four member firms (in the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland and Liechtenstein) to form a single firm.

The Big Four are basically the four biggest companies or firms of any industry or profession.
The names listed above are the big four of accountants and auditors.
Hi,
As Mr. CA.Rakesh said the name of the audit firm is not Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu...its Deloitte Haskins & Sells. Deloitte Touche and Tohmatsu if different from Deloitte haskins & sells..former mostly deals with US Processes like US taxation...and the latter is an audit firm. So if wanna do articleship apply in deloitte haskins & Sells

Well Deloitte Haskins & Sell as claimed by Phani is non existent. After a series of mergers and acquisitions today it is Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu. For prrof you may refer to history section of its own website at :

and also wikipedia if one wishes

Getting articleship there is like the biggest gift you can imagine.Like MBA's aspire for interns/placements at firms like McKinsey, same way it is for CA's. So the whole point is it is technically possible but literally very difficult. But one may argue nothing is easy when it comes to CA.
