Self study for PCC

IPCC 3385 views 31 replies

Hi people...

I've registered for PCC this June, and because of some circumstances I will be able to join up with coaching classes only in January.

However, I do not wish to waste my time so I was trying to self study but I'm having problems that way. Espicially in the practical subjects.

Can anyone help me out? I would also be glad if you could suggest some good reference books for the same...

Hi, Varun..

I am also a CA PCC Student and I myself  believe in self study. I am using following books and found them to be really Good.I hope this books will help u a lot.....

  • Auditing, Accounts, Costing and FM, Info Tech & Strat. mgmt - Padhuka's
  • Taxation - V.K.Singhania
  • Law, Ethics and Comm. - G.K.Kapoor

I am glad that you are thinking of utilizing the time you have before joining any tuitions. The first thing that you must do while self studying is to go through the syllabus, after which you will come to know that what all needs to be covered, how many chapters are there in each subject and with how many chapters you are familiar with, ie. Topics that you may have covered in your 12th or CPT exams .Planning plays a very important role in every sphere of life.
You are the one who knows your weakness as well as your strength so you must try to minimize your weakness and increase your strength i.e., if you are good at theory subjects but not as good at solving practical problems then you must devote more time towards practical subject and vice versa.

Then the next thing you can do is make a time table covering how many subjects you want to study and how much time you want to devote to each subject on a particular day

This is how you can start(you can study from the study material of the institute instead of referring any other book in the beginning)

ACCOUNTS  -  start with partnership accounts as it is quite familiar chapter and you will be able to solve the questions of first two units after reading and understanding the theory part as well as recollecting whatever you have learnt in 12th .

LAW - It is not a difficult subject. You can start with any chapter though starting with Indian contract act would be the best option.

AUDITING - Start from the first chapter as this will make you concepts clear and you will not face any difficulty in the chapters to come.

TAXATION - You can start with service tax and VAT part first.

COST ACCOUNTING- Read the first chapter which is a theory chapter and tells about the basics of cost accounting after reading this chapter you can proceed to other chapters .

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT - same as above

INFORMATION PRACTICE - You can start with any chapter .Internet and networking are important chapters so you may just go through them.

SRATEGIC MANAGEMENT - Start with any chapter.

While solving practical problems don't worry if you are taking much time as with regular practice you get the desired speed.

While studying theory subjects don’t be in a rush to cover a topic .Read each topic, if you do not understand read it once more and clear your concepts, make notes after reading each topic this will help you in remembering.

You will need reference book for accounts, cost accounting, financial management and taxation as these subjects require a lot of practice .There are so many books available like padhuka etc you can search for CA PCC books and look for yourself which author's books are suitable for you.

I hope that by now you must have got some idea. Let me tell you before I stop writing this reply that I have my CA PCC attempt in may 2009 and I have not taken any tuition. I believe in self studying.

hi priyam...

i originally sent this post as a message to you but i, dunno, maybe it wasn't delievered.

well, first i'd really like to thank you wholeheartedly for your reply. i was surprised to see someone took so much trouble to help me in such an ni-depth manner. thank you very much once again :-)

well, its not like i have trouble doing practical questions. actually, as yet i've been doing only taxation and auditing. auditing's too easy, no problems there. however in taxation, there are some points which are particularly confusing. like checking whether an income is taxable or not (under the topic, scope of income) and the concept of agricultural income. while the former is damn confusing for me, the latter is where i got completely bunged up. thats why i was asking for some reference books - maybe the language in them would be easier to understand.

and as for the other topics, i started these two first on the recommendations from my seniors. but i leafed through the other books and surmised as such that PCC modules aren't much different than CPT ones, meaning, not of much use in self-study. maybe i'll find out more when i read them thoroughly. but other subjects are gonna have to wait till i finish taxation. thats my plan, at least.

well... any comments?

Hi Varun

I received your message and replied back by sending the reply as a message .

Thank you Kaps for the explaination .

oh.. i dunno, i haven't recvd. that message as yet. when did you send that message? i'll wait for a day or so for the message to come, if it doesn't, i'll tell you about it here. if its not much of a problem, could you post it in the forum, if i dont get the message?

Hi, The messege is actualy on the page where you have your profile hope you find it now .

By the way here is the reply and thank you for appreciating my effort.

Firstly I would like to know that whether you know the reason that why your seniors told you to start with auditing and taxation first. As after knowinng the reason I can give you a better reply.

As you have started with taxation I would like to tell you something about the subject . In taxation you need to study from the very first chapter because the first chapter will have the basics and the following chapters will be based upon that and if you jump these important chapters you will never have your basics clear.

Taxation has much of theory part which is applied while computing total income. So yo will need to know the theory part first in order to solve the questions properly.

As far as the study material is concerned yes I think that they are similar to cpt modules in their writing technique and of course it is sometimes really difficult to understand the concept. But you can always take the help of reference books. Infact I studied for my CPT exams entirely from the study material of ICAI.

oh... how many marks did you get? in cpt, i mean.

and as for why my seniors asked me to do that first, its coz they'd help me in my articleship. the audit book is of some help when we go on auditing, and taxation helps in filling out the ITRs and preparing the statements.

and i do know where to look for the messges yaar. i checked just now. i still haven't got anything. doesnt matter now anyways, as you have posted it here.
