As such both are independent, and otherwise you are not left with any other option.
Unless there is any AIR reporting of reportable transaction, or TDS deducted, you may not receive any notice from ITD for AY 2017-18; even though you have filed return for AY 2018-19.

I agree with Mr. Dhirajlal. One more point to add, though you do not receive any notice from department but you still do not want to take any significant risk, compute your taxes including interest and remit the same for FY 2016-17 (AY 2017-18).
