No, these are the component softwares of the MS-Office program, which has to be purchased,
One time cost is there but for upgradation, microsoft may charge. However, upgradation always a right to user and not obligation.

The best substitute for ms word and ms excel is open office which is a free version.
Please don't undermine the usage of open office since it is absolutely free it has powerful features some which are not available in msoffice also.
If you are accustomed to using msoffice, only few commands have to be learnt.
Also
1.you can save file in the msoffice format itself
2.you can retrieve/open msoffice files make changes and save in msoffice format.
It can be freely downloaded from
If you are not satisfied then you can purchase msoffice 2007 which available in the market starting with Student Edition from Rs.4,000 to professional edition approximately Rs.14000 (to be confirmed)

Yes openoffice is absolutely free and msoffice (including msword, ms*xcel, mspowerpoint and others) costs starts from Rs.4000. Try download of openoffice if not satisfied go for msoffice. Further openoffice works in windows, linux and mac operating systems.

If you try for any update from MS-Office website then only it can track you, else tracking is not permissible under the law.
However, you will also be breaking the law by using that product without license to use, but still they cannot track you without your own permission.
BUT they can come with police and penalize if they are sure that you are using a pirated software, or the police also come on its own to check the softwares...
There are many regulations, you might be learned during studies of CA and CS, don't I think it should be reminded to you !

OK. Means they dont have any online control like in Mobile's. But they can randomly make enquiry in any corporate to check unauthorise use of their softwares.
