Over the last couple of weeks, professionals and taxpayers all over the country have come together to collectively request the Union and Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman to extend the due dates for Income Tax Returns, Tax Audit Reports, and GST Compliances. This request has been generated keeping in mind the large-scale disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hashtags like #Extend_Due_date #Extend_Due_Date_Immediately #extendreturnfillingdates were trending on the Social Networking Site Twitter for a long time. However, there was something peculiar in the Twitter hashtag #dateextendkarojhatpat.

The Income Tax Department commenced with the Jhatpat Processing for ITR 1 and ITR 4 in the month of December. In order to promote the initiative, the department did a paid promotion of the #ITRFileKaroJhatpat.

This is when the taxpayers and professionals felt extremely disheartened because even after numerous requests for due date extension, the Income Tax Department and the Ministry of Finance did not understand the plight and the disruption of the professionals caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Professionals, all over the country unionized and the #dateextendkarojhatpat started trending on Twitter, in no time, showcasing an unbelievable power that common citizens of the country hold with themselves.
