Subject:- Instruction regarding Testing of coumarin in imported Cinnamon-reg

Madam/Sir,

Reference is invited to letter F.No.1-1403/FSSAI/Imports/2015 (part 1) dated 30th November, 2021 issued by Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, New Delhi on the above-mentioned subject (copy enclosed).

2. It is requested that necessary action may be taken to sensitize officers under your jurisdiction hereby to ensure that the all imported consignments of cinnamon get tested for coumarin content (on dry basis), which should not be more than 0.3 percent by weight.

3. The difficulties, if any, in the implementation of this Instruction may please be brought to the notice of the Board.

ORDER

Subject: Testing of coumarin in imported cinnamon – Reg.

Standards of Cinnamon is specified at 2.9.4 of (Food Product Standards & Food Additives) regulations, 2011. As per the standard, the Coumarin content (on dry basis) shall not be more than 0.3 percent by weight. Further the FSSAI manual of method of analysis for spices, herbs and condiments covers the method of testing of coumarin in cinnamon.

In view of above, Authorized Officers are hereby directed to ensure that the all imported consignment of cinnamon gets tested for coumarin content.
