In a significant crackdown on corruption, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has apprehended a state official for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹3,000 in exchange for issuing a Goods and Services Tax (GST) number. The accused, identified as Malti Ramesh Kathale (43), currently holds a position at the state GST department office in Yerawada.
The arrest came following a complaint lodged with the authorities, prompting ACB sleuths to launch a meticulous operation. Acting swiftly, they set up a trap and caught Kathale red-handed while accepting the bribe money.
An FIR has been registered at the Yerawada police station against Kathale, charging her with offences under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act. This move underscores the commitment of law enforcement agencies to combat corruption at all levels of governance.
Amol Tambe, superintendent of police for the ACB's Pune range, emphasized the importance of citizen participation in rooting out corruption. He urged individuals to promptly report any instances of government employees soliciting bribes.
To facilitate reporting, citizens can reach out to the ACB headquarters located in the central building opposite Sassoon Hospital in Pune. Additionally, a toll-free hotline (1064) has been set up for easy accessibility and confidentiality.
This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing battle against corruption and the necessity for vigilance and collective action to uphold integrity and transparency in public service.
