Son of Vegetable Vendor Shines in CA May 2024 Exams

Last updated: 17 July 2024

In the bustling streets of Dombivli, amidst the daily clamor of vegetable vendors, a heartwarming story of determination and success has emerged. Neerabai Thombare, a humble vegetable seller, knows little about debits, credits, or balance sheets. Yet, she stands proud as her son, Yogesh, has recently cleared the prestigious Chartered Accountancy (CA) exam, becoming "a big person... CA or something like that," in her words.

Until a few days ago, Neerabai was unaware of the magnitude of Yogesh's achievement. Her knowledge of the profession was limited, but her pride and joy knew no bounds. Over the past four days, since the local Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) tweeted about Yogesh's success, the usually routine vegetable stall has become a place of celebration. Customers now stop by not just for beans and cabbage but to congratulate Neerabai on her son's remarkable accomplishment.

Speaking in Marathi, with tears in her eyes and wiping them with her saree pallu, Neerabai said, "That's when I realised this must be some achievement. People now tell me that it is hard to pass this exam..." Her voice trails off, filled with emotion.

The moment Yogesh received his results last Thursday (11th July 2024) was one of pure joy. He and a friend hurried to the vegetable stall to share the news with Neerabai. The open market witnessed a touching scene as Neerabai hugged her son, both of them crying tears of happiness. A friend captured this emotional moment on video, and it quickly went viral on social media.

The flood of congratulatory messages for Yogesh has been overwhelming. The State Public Works Department (PWD) minister, Ravindra Chavan, shared the video, highlighting this incredible achievement. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also expressed his admiration.

Yogesh's inclination towards academics was evident from a young age, setting him apart from his siblings, who showed less interest in studies. Life for Neerabai became increasingly challenging after she lost her husband, a labourer at a brick kiln, when Yogesh was just 14. Despite these hardships, she never wavered in her support for her son's education.

The villagers of Khoni, where Neerabai and her family live, are jubilant. Yogesh's success is a first for their Agri community, where few pursue higher education. "Today, people are congratulating me for my success, but the real credit goes to my aaiee [mother] who, despite the family's financial condition, always supported me in studies," Yogesh said, expressing his gratitude.

This story of Neerabai Thombare and her son Yogesh is a testament to the power of perseverance, parental support, and the triumph of the human spirit against all odds. Their journey serves as an inspiration to many, showcasing that with determination and support, remarkable achievements are within reach.
