Indian government detected a significant amount of evasion in goods and services tax (GST) over the last five years, amounting to Rs 3.33 lakh crore. However, only Rs 1.08 lakh crore, which is less than a third of the total amount, has been recovered so far.

The state of Maharashtra topped the list in terms of GST evasion detection, with an amount of Rs 62,053.13 crore evaded in the last five years. Karnataka followed with Rs 40,762.25 crore and West Bengal with Rs 31,141.65 crore.

Regarding fake GST registrations, Delhi had the highest number of fake registrations, with 5,810 cases detected, accounting for one in every five fake GST registrations detected in the country. In total, 25,449 fake GST registrations were detected, out of which 2,154 were suspended, and 17,105 were canceled.

Concerning the recovery of evaded GST, nearly one-fourth of the total recovered amount came from Maharashtra, which amounts to Rs 27,181.69 crore. Karnataka ranked second with Rs 9,681.92 crore, followed by Rajasthan (Rs 9,316.79 crore), Gujarat (Rs 8,447.9 crore), and Delhi (Rs 7,082.46 crore).

These figures highlight the efforts made by the government to detect and recover evaded GST and deal with fake GST registrations. However, the data also suggests that there is still a substantial amount of evaded tax that remains to be recovered.
