October Records 50% surge in VAT & GST Collection by Delhi Government

Delhi government's VAT and GST collection posted a surge of about 50 per cent in October this year, against the same month in 2021. A collection of Rs. 3,585.4 crore from VAT, state goods and services tax (SGST) and integrated goods and services tax (IGST) was done by the Delhi government last month, against Rs. 2,405.7 crore in October 2021, as per government officials.

This October's tax collection comprised Rs 535.3 crore towards value added tax, Rs. 1127.6 crore as SGST and Rs 1,922.5 crore as IGST. The tax collection under the three categories in the previous October was Rs 544.1 crore, Rs 1,012.6 crore and Rs 848.97 crore, respectively. However, the Union ministry of finance data released stated that Delhi government's GST revenue collection was Rs 4,670 crore in October this year, about 15 per cent more than previous year's Rs 4,045 crore.

The data also includes central GST and cess collected by Delhi government on sale of goods and services, but VAT levied on the sale of liquor and five petroleum products is not included. A senior Delhi government official stated that the festive season boosted the city's economy. The tax collection in the first six months this fiscal surged by 28 percent.

Delhi government projected a total receipt of Rs 75,800 crore in the budget for 2022-23, out of which tax collection was estimated at Rs 47,700 crore. GST and VAT were pegged at Rs 31,200 crore, excise duty, stamp and registration fee on sale of properties and road tax on motor vehicles were the other components.
