Nitin Gadkari Urges FM Nirmala Sitharaman to Withdraw GST on Life and Medical Insurance Premiums

Last updated: 31 July 2024

In the wake of widespread criticism of Budget 2024, Union Minister and Senior BJP leader Nitin Gadkari has penned a letter to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, advocating for the withdrawal of Goods and Services Tax (GST) on life and medical insurance premiums. Gadkari's appeal follows a memorandum submitted by the Nagpur Divisional Life Insurance Corporation Employees Union.

Key Issues Raised

In his letter, Gadkari emphasized the concerns raised by the union, highlighting the 18% GST currently imposed on both life and medical insurance premiums. He argued that taxing life insurance premiums effectively penalizes individuals who seek to protect their families against life's uncertainties. Similarly, the GST on medical insurance premiums is seen as a deterrent to the growth of this crucial sector, which plays a significant role in public health.

"The main issue raised by the Union is related to the withdrawal of GST on Life and Medical Insurance Premiums," Gadkari noted. "The imposition of GST on life insurance premiums amounts to taxing the uncertainties of life. Both life and medical insurance are essential for providing financial protection, and the current GST rates are proving to be a significant burden."

Additional Concerns

Gadkari also mentioned that the union raised additional concerns regarding the differential treatment of savings through life insurance, the need for reintroducing income tax deductions for health insurance premiums, and the consolidation of public and private sector general insurance companies.

Request for Immediate Action

In light of these issues, Gadkari has urged the Finance Minister to prioritize the suggestion to withdraw GST on insurance premiums. He emphasized that such a move would alleviate the financial burden on senior citizens and simplify the process of verifying insurance claims.

Context and Criticism

Gadkari's letter comes amidst broader criticism of the Budget 2024. Critics have argued that the Budget favors states governed by key BJP allies and imposes high tax rates on the salaried class. The Finance Minister has countered these criticisms by asserting that the Budget allocates funds fairly across states, regardless of whether they were mentioned in the Budget speech.

The BJP has defended the Budget, framing it as a strategic step towards achieving 'Viksit Bharat' or a developed India by 2047, with long-term policy priorities designed to advance the nation's growth.

Conclusion

As the debate over Budget 2024 continues, Gadkari's request for a reconsideration of GST on insurance premiums adds a significant voice to the ongoing discussion about tax policies and their impact on individuals and businesses.
