Meesho Welcomes Non-GST Sellers to Reshape E-commerce

Last updated: 04 October 2023

In a game-changing move, Meesho, the E-commerce unicorn, has officially thrown open its platform to sellers without a Goods and Services Tax (GST) registration, effective from October 1, 2023. This strategic decision by the company is poised to have far-reaching implications and is anticipated to potentially unlock access for a staggering 1.5-2 crore sellers, primarily hailing from historically under-penetrated states, to join forces with Meesho.

The groundbreaking development follows a recent directive from the GST Council, granting e-commerce platforms the green light to onboard non-GST registered sellers with an annual turnover of up to Rs 40 lakh. This directive not only signifies a pivotal shift but also represents a significant boost for Meesho, a startup backed by SoftBank, that harbors ambitions of onboarding a whopping 1 crore businesses onto its platform by 2027.

Meesho Welcomes Non-GST Sellers to Reshape E-commerce

Co-founder and Chief Executive of Meesho, Vidit Aatrey, expressed his enthusiasm about this landmark move, saying, "We believe that this exemption will not only open up vast horizons for aspiring entrepreneurs but also contribute significantly to enriching our product offerings."

However, this transformation also comes with an imperative. Business experts and startup mentors emphasize that these non-GST registered sellers must streamline their processes. E-commerce players, in turn, must ensure an equivalent level of proficiency from these sellers. Modern customers are discerning and sophisticated, making it imperative for platforms to bridge the gap between GST and non-GST sellers seamlessly.

To facilitate this transition, Meesho has undertaken several technological adaptations, including simplifying registration and catalog upload procedures. The company has also introduced geo-restricted discovery to enforce intra-state sales and enhance shipping labels. Furthermore, Meesho is actively developing educational content specifically tailored for this category of sellers, equipping them with the tools and knowledge needed to succeed in the digital marketplace.

An eye-opening statistic highlighted in the company statement reveals that approximately 12 lakh sellers drop out every year during the registration process due to the complexities associated with GST requirements.

As Meesho embraces this transformative journey, it stands at the forefront of revolutionizing the e-commerce landscape, fostering a more inclusive and dynamic environment for entrepreneurs from every corner of India. This bold step not only aligns with the evolving regulatory landscape but also reflects Meesho's unwavering commitment to empowering small businesses and realizing its ambitious growth targets.
