On Monday, August 28, 2023, the mobile wings of the tax department in Punjab inspected 12 furnaces and impounded 60 vehicles during a surprise check at Mandi Gobindgarh. The operation was conducted by the mobile wings of State Investigation and Preventive Unit (SIPU), Ropar, Patiala, Shambhu and Jalandhar.
The inspection was carried out to detect Goods and Services Tax (GST) evasion in the iron and steel industry. The officials found that the furnaces were operating without proper documentation and that the vehicles were transporting goods without paying GST.
The officials have seized the vehicles and the furnaces and have initiated legal proceedings against the owners. They have also warned the tax evaders to immediately stop their illegal activities.
The Minister of Finance, Planning, Excise and Taxation, Punjab, Harpal Singh Cheema, has said that the government is committed to cracking down on tax evasion. He has directed the officials to randomly plan such surprise inspections to nab the tax evaders.
The surprise check at Mandi Gobindgarh is the latest in a series of operations conducted by the tax department in Punjab to detect GST evasion. In recent months, the department has conducted similar operations in other industries, including the construction and pharmaceutical sectors.
The government is taking these steps to ensure that everyone pays their fair share of taxes. GST is a consumption tax that is paid by the end consumer. When businesses evade GST, they are essentially shifting the tax burden to the consumers.
The government is committed to ensuring that the GST system is fair and transparent. These surprise checks are a part of that effort.
