In a shocking case of bureaucratic oversight, a labourer from Bihar’s Gaya district, Rajiv Kumar Verma, has been served an income tax notice for over Rs 2 crore. Earning a modest monthly wage of Rs 10,000, Rajiv and his family are now grappling with the distressing situation. The notice was delivered at his residence in the Kotwali Police Station area and the news left the family in a state of shock.
Rajiv has been visiting the Income Tax Department office for four consecutive days to resolve the issue, but no solution has been provided so far. He expressed his frustration, stating, "Even if I work my entire life as a labourer, I will never be able to accumulate such an amount."
He recalled making a fixed deposit of Rs 2 lakh at Corporation Bank in Gaya on January 22, 2015, which he later withdrew on August 16, 2016. Despite this small transaction, he was served this massive tax notice. The Income Tax Department advised him to file an appeal stating that discrepancy could be due to a technical error.
To make matters worse, Rajiv has been asked to pay a penalty of Rs 67 lakh within two days. The family, who had no prior knowledge of income tax filings, is now left confused and fearful of the consequences of this glaring mistake.
The incidence of mistakes in the tax notices, especially those issued to the beneficiaries belonging to the economically weaker section of the society has become a cause of worry. It becomes important for greater transparency and support for individuals unfamiliar with the tax system.
