IT Raids on YouTubers: Kerala s Digital Stars in the Crosshairs

The YouTubers who were raided include:

  • Pearle Maaney
  • Tech Travel Eat by Sujith Bhakthan
  • M4Tech
  • Techie Pandi
  • Techie HG
  • Techie Gyaan
  • Techie Nikhil
  • Techie Arun
  • Techie Rohit
  • Techie Arun Prasath
  • Techie Sreejith

Raids were conducted in Ernakulam, Pathanamthitta, Thrissur, Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Kasargod districts.

Income Tax officials said that these YouTubers earn an estimated annual income of over Rs 1 crore. However, their tax filings do not accurately reflect their actual earnings, indicating inappropriate tax deductions at source. Additionally, officials have expressed suspicions regarding the paid promotional content conducted by these content creators. The investigation aims to ascertain the accuracy of their income declarations and examine any potential discrepancies in their financial activities.

Income Tax Department sources said that the YouTubers claim that they have no fixed income and the monthly payments they receive from YouTube and other social media platforms are dependent on the viewership of their content. This has caused confusion in terms of tax payment. The IT team also examined the bank statements and other transaction details related to the revenue earned by these respective YouTubers. IT sources also said more raids targeting other YouTubers in the state are scheduled to take place in the following days.

The IT department is yet to release any information about the findings of the raids. However, the raids have raised concerns among the Malayalam YouTube community about the possibility of tax evasion.

The IT department has been cracking down on tax evasion by YouTubers and other content creators in recent months. In April 2023, the IT department raided the homes and offices of several YouTubers in Tamil Nadu. The raids were conducted in connection with allegations of tax evasion and money laundering.

The IT department's crackdown on tax evasion by YouTubers is a sign that the government is taking the issue seriously. It is also a reminder to YouTubers that they need to be compliant with tax laws.

The raids on the Malayalam YouTubers have also sparked a debate about the role of social media influencers in society. Some people have argued that the raids are a sign that the government is trying to silence critical voices. Others have argued that the raids are a necessary step to ensure that everyone pays their fair share of taxes.

The debate is likely to continue in the coming days and weeks. However, one thing is clear: the IT department's crackdown on tax evasion by YouTubers is a sign that the government is taking the issue seriously.
