IPL Ticket Prices Spark Social Media Uproar Over 70% Tax Burden

Last updated: 31 March 2025

A recent social media post has ignited a heated debate over the steep taxation on Indian Premier League (IPL) tickets, particularly after a Chennai Super Kings (CSK) vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) match at Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium. A cricket fan, Ravi Handa, pointed out that a ticket with a base price of Rs 2,343 was sold for Rs 4,000 after taxes, effectively imposing over 70% tax on the ticket price.

Breakdown of Taxes on IPL Tickets

According to the ticket details, the additional charges included:

  • 25% Entertainment Tax (levied by the Tamil Nadu government)
  • 14% Central GST (CGST)
  • 14% State GST (SGST)

This structure has led to a 'tax-on-tax' situation, as GST is applied after including the Entertainment Tax, further increasing the total cost for fans.

Social Media Reacts: 'A Masterclass in India's Tax-on-Tax Policy'

The revelation has triggered strong reactions online.

A Reddit user explained: "Entertainment Tax was subsumed under GST, but with a catch-only Entertainment Tax (other than those levied by local bodies) was subsumed. This is why Tamil Nadu imposes an additional Entertainment Tax separately."

Another user highlighted: "Your Rs 4,000 IPL ticket is a mini masterclass in India's tax policy. You're not just paying to watch a match, you're funding a policy loophole."

Many fans have expressed frustration over the exorbitant taxation, with some calling IPL tickets a "luxury item" that is now heavily taxed.

BCCI's Tax Exemption Adds to the Controversy

While cricket fans are paying massive taxes on IPL tickets, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) enjoys 100% tax exemption on its IPL earnings. The BCCI is registered as a "charitable organization" under Section 12A of the Income Tax Act, allowing it to claim that it is promoting cricket as a non-profit activity.

This exemption was upheld by the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) in 2021, which ruled that monetizing cricket through sponsorships and revenue streams does not change its fundamental nature as a sport promotion activity.

Cricketers and Foreign Players Also Subject to Differential Taxation

  • Indian players pay only 10% Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) on their IPL salaries.
  • Foreign players face a higher 20% TDS rate.

Will IPL Ticket Taxation Be Reconsidered?

The steep taxation on IPL tickets raises broader concerns about the fairness of India's indirect tax system. With the GST Council periodically reviewing tax structures, cricket fans and stakeholders may hope for a reconsideration of how entertainment taxation is structured, especially for events as widely popular as the IPL.

For now, IPL fans will have to pay up or miss out on live matches, as Tamil Nadu's local Entertainment Tax continues to inflate ticket prices.
