Surge in GST Compliance: Filers Increase by 65% Over 5 Years, Reaching 11.3 Million in April 2023

Finance ministry reported a remarkable 65% surge in the number of Goods and Services Tax (GST) return filers over the past five years, reaching a substantial 11.3 million as of April 2023. Additionally, the count of active taxpayers registered under GST witnessed a notable growth, soaring from 10.6 million in April 2018 to an impressive 14 million.

Data shared by the ministry revealed that in the current fiscal year, 90% of eligible taxpayers are filing GSTR-3B returns by the end of the filing month, showcasing a substantial increase from the 68% recorded in the inaugural year of GST rollout in 2017-18.

The ministry attributed this surge in compliance to the simplification of rules and procedures within the GST framework, emphasizing that these changes have led to a higher percentage of eligible taxpayers meeting their filing obligations.

Since the nationwide rollout of GST on July 1, 2017, the number of GSTR-3B filers has seen a significant uptick, climbing from 7.24 million in April 2018 to the current 11.3 million as of April 2023. GSTR-3B is the monthly return form used for filing outward supplies details and tax payment.
