The government has said that 7 individuals have been arrested by Central GST officers during a special drive to detect fake GST registration. The drive was conducted from May 16 to July 15, 2023.
As part of the drive, 9,369 bogus entities have been identified and Rs 10,902 crore GST evasion detected. Recovery of Rs 45 crore has also been made.
The Minister of State for Finance, Pankaj Chaudhary, informed the Lok Sabha about the arrests on Monday. He said that the government is committed to weeding out fake GST registrations and bringing to book those who are involved in tax evasion.
The arrests are a significant step in the government's efforts to clamp down on fake GST registrations. The fake registrations are used by unscrupulous elements to evade taxes and defraud the government. The arrests will send a strong message to those who are involved in such activities.
The government has also taken other steps to check fake GST registrations. These include strengthening the verification process and making it more difficult for fraudulent entities to obtain GST registration.
The government is also working to improve the data sharing between the GSTN and the tax authorities. This will help the authorities to identify and track fake GST registrations more effectively.
The government's efforts to check fake GST registrations are a welcome step. They will help to ensure that the GST system is fair and that the government is able to collect the revenue that it needs to fund essential services.
