Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced in Coimbatore on Thursday that a Group of Ministers (GoM) is actively reviewing the demands of the hotel industry regarding GST on various food items. The review aims to address concerns raised by hotel owners about the different GST rates applied to items such as sweets, savouries, and bakery products served at hotels and restaurants.
To the concern raised by a prominent restaurant owner which was spoken in Coimbatore, Sitharaman says that the hotel owners association have been presenting their demands to the GoM over the past year. The Group has already submitted a status report and is anticipated to tender the final report very shortly.
FM Sitharaman emphasized on the aspect that all the decisions taken by GST Council in the last seven years are unanimous decisions of the Ministers of different states. Except for one issue in the past, there has been no opposition to the decisions made by the Council, she added.
As the hotel industry awaits potential changes in GST rates on food items, the recommendations of the GoM could bring clarity and address concerns surrounding the inconsistent tax structure.
