Commercial Taxes Department Introduces Biometric Face Authentication for GST Registration

Last updated: 03 January 2025

The Andhra Pradesh Commercial Taxes Department, in collaboration with the Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN), has launched an innovative Biometric Face Authentication feature for GST registration. This move aims to enhance security, simplify the verification process and curb fraudulent activities in the GST ecosystem.

Commercial Taxes Department Introduces Biometric Face Authentication for GST Registration

Key Features of the New Authentication System

1. Streamlined Verification Process

The new Biometric Face Authentication system reduces the registration verification process from three steps to two. The steps include:

  • Photo Capture and Face Authentication: Biometric details are verified using facial recognition.
  • Document Verification: Verification of supporting documents completes the registration.

2. Enhanced Security

  • Prevents bogus taxpayers from entering the GST ecosystem.
  • Safeguards Aadhaar details from misuse and eliminates the creation of fake identity cards.
  • Protects innocent individuals whose Aadhaar information might have been compromised.

3. Convenient Mobile Application

  • GSTN has developed an Android-compatible mobile app for Biometric Authentication Officers (BAOs).
  • The app allows officers to log in, input Aadhaar details, and capture applicants’ photos for seamless face authentication without requiring external hardware devices like fingerprint or iris scanners.

Expansion of GST Seva Kendras (GSKs)

Currently, Andhra Pradesh operates 12 GST Seva Kendras (GSKs) for biometric verification. With the introduction of the mobile app, the verification process becomes more accessible and efficient, further empowering the department to maintain a robust taxpayer database.

Impact of the New System

Speaking on the launch, Chief Commissioner of State Tax, Babu. A, emphasized that this feature will help eliminate the misuse of fake Input Tax Credit (ITC) at the registration stage and ensure that only legitimate taxpayers are enrolled in the GST system. The initiative also aligns with the government’s broader goal of enhancing trust, security, and transparency in India’s GST ecosystem.

Taxpayers and professionals are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the updated registration process to ensure compliance.
