CEAT Ltd Faces Over INR 19 Crore GST Demand and Penalties; Initiates Analysis and Countermeasures
Tyre manufacturer CEAT Ltd disclosed on Wednesday that it has encountered GST demands and penalties exceeding INR 19 crore from tax authorities in Maharashtra and Vadodara. The Additional Commissioner, CGST & Central Excise, Vadodara, issued an order for an interest of INR 3.27 crore and a penalty of INR 13.68 crore. This follows a show cause notice (SCN) initially issued due to a delay in reflecting input tax credit to the credit ledger, attributed to a technical issue in the TRAN-1 return, as detailed in CEAT Ltd's regulatory filing.
In a separate case, the Deputy Commissioner of State Tax, Maharashtra, issued an order demanding INR 22 lakh, coupled with interest of INR 26 lakh and a penalty of INR 2 lakh. This order stems from an SCN initially issued for the reversal of input tax credit related to non-payment of tax by suppliers. Additionally, an interest of INR 1.59 crore is levied for the delay in reflecting Input Tax Credit, caused by a technical issue in the TRAN-1 return, according to the company.
CEAT Ltd affirmed that it is actively analyzing both cases and taking appropriate steps against the orders. The company emphasized that, as of now, the final impact on its financial, operational, or other activities remains uncertain.
This development underscores the complex regulatory challenges faced by businesses in navigating the intricacies of GST compliance. As CEAT Ltd pursues actions against the authorities' orders, industry observers will be closely monitoring the situation to understand potential implications and learnings for other companies in the sector.
