61 Kg Silver Seized in Jharkhand, GST Evasion Probe Underway

Last updated: 07 December 2024

The Government Railway Police (GRP) in Rourkela has seized approximately 61 kilograms of silver from a Jharkhand man, triggering a State GST inquiry into potential tax evasion. The consignment’s estimated value ranges between ₹54 lakh and ₹61 lakh, based on its purity.

Discovery During Routine Search

Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) Reshma Ekka reported that the seizure occurred during routine checks at Rourkela railway station on Wednesday morning. The suspect, Chandan Soni (30) from Ranchi, Jharkhand, aroused suspicion with his behaviour while waiting to board the delayed Hatia-bound Tapaswini Express.

Upon searching his trolley bag and backpack, the GRP team discovered small bundles of silver contraband. Soni was taken into custody and handed over, along with the silver, to the State GST authorities for further investigation.

Details of the Seizure

  • Source of the Silver: Preliminary investigations revealed that Soni transported around 51 kg of silver ornaments from Agra, Uttar Pradesh, and collected an additional 10 kg in the form of bricks from Rourkela.
  • Lack of Documentation: Deputy Commissioner of SGST, Jagdish Saha, noted that while Soni claimed to have valid purchase documents for the ornaments, he failed to produce records for most of the Agra consignment and had no documents for the silver bricks.

Tax Implications

The State GST levies a 3% tax on gold and silver, including ornaments and bricks. Authorities are verifying the available documents to determine the extent of tax evasion. The seized silver is set to be deposited in the district treasury in Rourkela as the investigation continues.

Broader Implications

This seizure underscores the vigilance of law enforcement and tax authorities in curbing tax evasion and ensuring compliance with GST laws. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining accurate documentation for high-value goods to avoid legal complications.
