3 GST Officials Booked for Murder of Truck Driver in Kanpur

Last updated: 26 July 2023

This is a tragic incident involving the death of a truck driver, Balbir Singh, outside the State Goods Service Tax (SGST) office in Kanpur. According to reports, Balbir Singh was physically assaulted and wrongfully confined for three days by the SGST officials after his truck was seized for alleged tax evasion during a check at the GT Road near Geeta Nagar crossing.

During this confinement, Balbir Singh informed the officials about the death of his younger son due to electrocution in Ludhiana and requested them to allow him to attend the funeral. However, the officials allegedly refused his plea and kept him confined to his truck, despite his emotional distress and pleas.

The truck driver was eventually found dead in the cabin of his truck on Sunday morning. The cause of his death was not immediately clear in the post-mortem report, and his viscera has been preserved for further investigation.

The police have taken action in response to a complaint filed by Balbir Singh's elder son, Govind Singh, who came from Punjab to report the incident. The FIR (First Information Report) has been registered against two joint commissioners and one additional commissioner of SGST, identified as Amit Mohan, Paras Nath, and some unnamed department officials.

It is now up to the police to investigate the matter thoroughly, gather evidence, and carry out necessary findings to determine the events leading to Balbir Singh's death and the actions of the accused SGST officials. The investigation will likely involve interviews, examination of evidence, and statements from witnesses and individuals involved in the case. Once the investigation is complete, further legal actions will be taken accordingly.

This incident has raised concerns among trader groups who believe that detaining a driver who was already in custody of the SGST officials was unnecessary and contributed to the unfortunate outcome.

It's essential to let the legal process unfold, and the authorities carry out a fair and impartial investigation to ensure justice for Balbir Singh and his family. The accused officials will have the opportunity to present their side of the story during the investigation and subsequent legal proceedings.
