yield in simple words is total return net of discounting factor from an investment. Generally used in fixed income bearing securities/instruments.

Example:

Government Securities Market
7.72% GS 2025	:7.6229%
91 day T-bills	: 6.8536%*
182 day T-bills	: 6.9298%*
364 day T-bills	: 6.9137%*

The term Yield is also used in relationship with input & output like the yield of producing a product etc..

Yes we can consider as returns but discounted returns.
