Friends I know the basic that ping helps in launching webpages but how exactly it happens and why is it used????

PING STANDS FOR PERSONAL INTERNET GROPHER WHICH SHOWS & GIVES REPLY TO YOU THAT WHETHER U R CONNECTED TO UR INTERNET CONNECTION OR NOT.
JUST ASK UR PROVIDER. HE WILL GIVE U 3 PINGS. ONE SHOWS WHETHER U R CONNECTED TO UR MODEM. 2ND SHOWS WHETHER U R CONNECTED TO UR LOCAL EXCHANGE CARRIER & 3 RD SHOWS WHETHER U R CONNECTED TO MAIN SERVER OF UR ISP I.E. IF BSNL THAN BANGLORE
JUST GO TO RUN & TYPE 3 PINGS ONE BY ONE U CAN KNOW

1. Short for Packet InterNet Groper, ping is a utility used to verify if a network data packet is capable of being distributed to an address without errors. The ping utility is commonly used to check for network errors.
2. In computer gaming, a ping, also known as a high ping or low ping, is a measurement of how fast the connection to the game server the player has. For example, a player with a low 50 ping is going to have a better game experience than a player with a high 250 ping.
Options:
-t Pings the specified host until stopped.
To see statistics and continue - type Control-Break;
To stop - type Control-C.
-a Resolve addresses to hostnames.
-n count Number of echo requests to send.
-l size Send buffer size.
-f Set Don't Fragment flag in packet.
-i TTL Time To Live.
-v TOS Type Of Service.
-r count Record route for count hops.
-s count Timestamp for count hops.
-j host-list Loose source route along host-list.
-k host-list Strict source route along host-list.
-w timeout Timeout in milliseconds to wait for each
reply.

Hi all,
PING is used to know whether the computers in the network are connected properly or not for data transfer.
example: Suppose there is some error in transfer of data from one system to other in a LAN(say). Then you check using a PING command. If there is no reply, then there is a problem in network connection else error is somewhere else.
