I made a mistake in mentioning the assessment year while filing the returns. How can I rectify? what is the procedure?
Thanks

You can't do anything now.
Maximum time was upto 31st March 2010 for revised return.
Just consult someone that what could be the consequences of this, although you have done error only in A.Y.
Btw, ab kahan se yaad aa gayi ye baat.
Haal hi mein return file kiya hai kya. :-0

In case of such mistakes, you could write to the A.O. Informing him about the mistake made by you. It may help in case of scrutiny/ inquiry.
The A.O may also consider this genuine mistake.
Unintentional Mistakes are always allowable to be corrected by Law.

I found it while filing the returns this year. All the returns filed online can be accessed online.. and when I checked for AY2008-2009, there was nothing. Except for the AY, everything else in the returns is correct.
Do I need to go to the IT office and get it corrected? If so, is there any standard procedure?

that sounds great. can you elaborate on the procedure and how to find out and contact A.O ? Should I give the request in the form of a normal letter? Should I post it or submit in person?

Dont worry when u gotany notice then reply or wtite to your assessing officer abt this mistake and return of Ass. Year 2007-08 can not be accepted by March 31, 2009 so its mistake of IT Dept also how they have accepted the return.

I think It is not the mistake of IT deptt. they consider ur return for AY 08-09 as revised return of AY 07-08....
No need to worry about it, its an Unintentional mistake.......
If u ll find a notice then take a necessary action by writing to AO

when you are filing a revised return, you have to furnish the details of the original return right? but in my case it was just a normal itr.. and i have not recieved any notice from IT till date. but in the website , it doesnot show my returns.

Since its a clerical error just intimate ur AO with the facts and ask for pardon.....
Intimate him before he intimates u.....

Dear Friend
In my views dont intimate Assessing Officer because if he intimates you than firstly he will send notice and give chance to rectify the error (show cause notice).
At that time u can correct it.
if u will intimate him than it may be little bit problem for you (unnecessary problem)

Did u also file ur ITR for ay 7-8 online ?
if yes it is immpossible to upload again the ITR of 7-8 unless u tick on 'revised option'
Moreover the dept officials would have not accepted the ITR of ay 7-8 even on 31st March 2010, till 31st March 2010 they would only accepted the return filed for ay 8-9 and 9-10 and e-filed returns u/s 139(1) for ay 8-9 only.
as on today, u cannot submit ITR of ay 8-9 as it is time barred unless u receive notice u/s 148.
anyways, In my opinion u sit back peacefully and give clarification to ITO when asked for. U have not done anything delibrately wrong so forget everything and be more vigilant in future :)
