Yes, AVG IS very good, if you are not serious net user, it is fine for home user , for surft only ,, for other purpose like financial transaction , prevent smam you should shift to a paid one, avg has very high rate of false positive, in this respect Avast free is good.

remember avg free has no firewall in it and windows firewall (except windows 7 firewall) is very weak. ideally to protect a computer for home use you need.

Antivirus + antispyware - avg 9 has it both

2 way firewall -- don't have

anti spam - very week on avg

rootkit protection - don't have

karnet defence - don't have/

so decide yourself...
