Short Term Capital Gains for multiple random purchases?

204 views 2 replies

I know that STCG for debt funds applies if we sell within 3 years. But from when is this 3 years calculated if a person did not purchase all of his mutufal fund units at once but purchased at random intervals?

Say a person purchased 100 units in 2017 January, consider this as A and purchased another 100 units in 2017 February, consider this as B. If he wants to sell 50 units in 2020 February, which 50 units would he be selling? from A or B? How to determine from which installment he is redeeming? Installment A completed 3 years, installment B completed 2 years and 11 months. So is he redeeming A? or the 3 years time starts from the day he made his first installment to the day he is selling and the later installment dates do not matter?

Thank you.

FIFO (First In First Out) method applicable here.

So just like SIP which has official 3 year lock-in period, these non SIP installments also follow the same procedure, FIFO. Thank you for the answer Mr. Rambhia.
