I would like to know if a proprietory concern which is registered under the service tax rules is required to file a half yr'y return even though it does not cross the threshhold of exemption limit.The registration was done in the previous yr and the tax paid .Since this yr the service rendered was less than the exemption limit, is half yr'y return required to be filed?

Service Tax NIL return required to be file with the department.

As i understand last year your taxable services provided was exceeding Rs.10 Lakhs. Therefore as per the notification in the subsequnet year even if the taxable services is Rs 2lakhs for the year ST has to be paid.
Exemption depends on the pr yr taxable services.

Yes, in the current year you cannot avil the exemption. Tax needs to be deposited.
