Dear STRPs,
It gives me great pleasure in stating that the Government has launched the Service Tax Return Preparer (STRP) Scheme by issuing Notification No.7/2009-ST dated 03.02.2009. In the inaugural phase of the STRP Scheme, it has been decided to impart training on Service Tax to the existing TRPs who have been engaged in the task of preparing returns in relation to the Income Tax Department. The Directorate General of Service Tax (DGST) will be functioning as the Resource Centre, on behalf of the Central Board of Excise & Customs (CBEC), for the STRP Scheme. The CBEC have, in alliance with its Partner Organization viz. NIIT, formulated and structured the training programme in such a way as to adopt a more practical approach to teaching the subject matter relevant for you. The training would offer a simulated environment to you to enable you to practice the end-to-end process of computing service tax, filling out relevant forms and filing returns. Apart from providing you the required exposure to the legal aspects and procedures related to Service Tax, the training would also equip you with the ways to handle various situations and all kinds of clients. I am sure that the soft skills and expertise acquired by you would go a long way in giving you a headstart in this sphere and in enabling you to build and expand your client base. The training will be delivered by experts in the field. You can seek their advice and guidance and address your queries and concerns to them so that you may get answers to your questions to your satisfaction. You could also use this training as forum to interact with your fellow STRPs in order to learn from each other and exchange tips amongst you. It is hoped that this training would be a platform for you to learn, grow and be independent and dynamic. The training will be preceded by an 8 days self study period starting from 24th March 2009 to 31st March 2009. You should utilize this period to grasp the subject matter on your own, to the best of your ability, on the basis of the study material which would be made available to you. The training will be conducted in two batches and each batch would undergo 6 days training course. Needless to add, the main emphasis during the training will be on learning and practicing the skill of filing Service Tax Returns. At the end of the training module, you will be required to appear for a certification test, which must be cleared by you so as to enable you to function as a STRP. Even after the completion of the training programme, NIIT will continue to make available suitable inputs and guidance to you and will provide a suitable platform to you to grow and interact. The 1st batch of Service Tax training module will be conducted from 1st April 2009 to 6th April 2009 and the 2nd batch of training will be held from 7th April 2009 to 12th April 2009. The examination will be conducted on 14th April 2009. While further details about the training will be provided to you by NIIT, you may also call at 18001023738 for any assistance or information in this regard. I wish you all the best for your success as you are at the threshold of coming out as an accomplished and enterprising Service Tax Return Preparer.
