Service Tax registration

can anyone let me know the procedure for a new concern to register for service tax......is it online or a manual one...?

you need to get registered online via www.aces.gov.in for new service tax registration, and then, submit the copy of online receipt to the service tax department concerned, only after that you would get service tax number, you can also get ST-2 after logging in to that site..................

Yeah, it can now be done online. You need to apply to the Jurisdictional Superintendent of Central Excise or Service Tax with copies of testimonial like PAN/Voter Card, Trade Licence, authority about using a particular premise stating the services you want to deal in. The particulars can be submitted online ACES (Automation of Central Excise and Service Tax. The programme will automatically generate a paper showing the Location, your Jurisdictional Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent. After verifying the facts as stated and the copies of Testimonials you will be supplied with the formal Certificate of Registration. Till such time, the certificate is obtained, the temporary number that the ACES Programme has generated will be sufficient. The same Registration number will be shown in the formal Certificate.
