Both are good books. But I would suggest TN Manoharan for CA-IPCC direct tax with study material and also Practice Manual for Indirect tax.

My suggestion would be the book by Mr. Yogender Bangar if you're learning on your own as that is the main purpose of this book. Once you are well versed with topic it would be suggestable to glance through the institute study material and solve the practice mannual which is must from exam point of view.
Coming to books by Mr. Vinod Singhania, they are useful for reference after you're qualified and not that recommended for exam preparation.
Hope this clears the confusion.

Dear Student,
While we suggest Vinod Gupta for Direct Tax, we suggest Bangar for Indirect Tax for your reference.
All the Best!
