Reason for naming clauses

Sometimes clauses are written in numbers like clause (1) and sometimes in alphabets like clause (a) and sometimes in roman like clause (i) Why is it so??

actually it is a heirarchy system. first comes the section, then sub-section, then clause, then sub-clause. now lets take an example, sec. 142(1)(ii)(a). if you jave read it then it is read as sub-clause a of clause ii of sub-section 1 of section 142. i hope your query is clear.
But what about section 10(1).Here it is clause (1) of section 10.why did we write clause (1) and not clause (i) or clause (a)...this is my question???
