I m a commerce graduate student ,under Direct entry scheme of ca it is compulsory for graduates to register for both groups of ipc, now my question is - is it compulsory to appear in both group or i can give only one group .

1) yes if you want to do Chartered Accountancy Course, you have to register both the groups.
And you also have to pass both the groups
it is upto your's choice whether you want to attempt one by one or both at a time.
2) you can attempt one group at a time (prefer 1st group first)

Yes i am sure you can give each group separately. However for registration to course, you may choose option of Both groups with Articles, so that you dont need to again pay later. While filling the exam form, you can just choose any group you would like to give exam.
