Dear Radhika,
NGO is,as the name suggests, just a common jargon for any association where the direct governing body is not the government but any other private entity.
In India, the NGOs can register themselves as:
1. Society under Society Registation Act 1860,
or
2. Trust under Indian Trust act 1882;
or
3. Company under section 8 under Companies Act 2013.
1. Registration as Society shall be done at Registrar of Firms and Societies or the respective states and under the rules specified by the RFAS of that state.
2. Registration as Trust shall be done as per the procedure laid down by the Registrar of Trusts of of respective state;
3. Registration as a company u/s 8 shall be governed as per the procedure for Incorporation of Company as under Companies Act 2013.
All the forms of organisation have their own merits and demerits, so you can choose upon the best suited as per your requirement.
In case you need any further clarification, you can ask for more details.

Dear Radhika,
Greetings.
Referring to your further query on registration of Trust:
though different states have different sets of formalities but the basic process is more or less the same.
So let me rephrase:
First, prepare a Trust Deed, and think of the names to be opted- keep 3 of them ready as you may face rejections on name options.
Now look for the Trust Registrar/Charity Commissioner's office of respective jurisdiction.
There you will find the details about the process like format of application, amount of challan and respective heads therein and any other formality to comply with.
If the process is online, it will save your time and efforts.
Also if you need help on how to prepare a Trust Deed, you can ping on guptapunit @ live.com.
Hope this clears your query.
Feel free to reconnect.
