Pls Advise me... I m under confusion!!

Hi... I have passed IPCC last may.. Joined articleship in a small firm. They have agreed to give to as much as leave as i want to go to my classes and prepare for Final exams. But I m getting just Rs.2000 p.m. as stipend.(It has to cover atleast my petrol expenses i feel). Work timing is from 10 AM to 6PM six days a week. I m very sad about stipend and planning to get transfer to some other big firms that give some reasonable stipend. I m very much confused whether to get transfer or continue in the same firm Pls advise me on this issue and help me in taking right decision. How much stipend u all are getting??!!

Well, First think on what you want to do in the long term. If you want to settle for a job, then dont hesitate, Join any Big firms. You will get good amount of stipend to meet your studies, conveyance and other expenses. You will also be get good amount of leave to prepare for exams but i dont think that you will be allowed to attend classes frequently.i.e you may have to bunk some classess here and there if you are sent for Outstation Audit or made to stay late in the evening. SO, if you want to join big firm, it is advisable only if you are comfortable in doing self study in my opinion. Yes, leaves, good pay , good work exposure and a brand name is assured. If you want to go for practise or want a career only in the traditional fields of accounting, audit and taxation, you can continue in your current firm itself provided, your firm gives you a good opportunity to hone your skills to work independently and use of judgement needed for a practising CA as well as at the same time see whether you get adequate time for studies also. Dont bother about the small pay as stipend. Don't make choices based on stipend alone. Consider the above alternatives also before making decision. Take Care. All the Best

Dont think much about the stipend. Institute's proposal to double the stipend is under Government's consideration. So thing to worry about is your work experience in various field like audit tax accounts etc..Be sure you will have good exposure to all those areas during this 3-year period. Learn as much new things as you can. If there is a possibility to learn all these things in your firm, you can continue, else you may consider change. But if you want bigger stipends, then participate in the CA Article Assistants Campus Placements. There big firms will come and if you get selected you may easily get a minimum of 13-15k pm, but you may need to change the location as specified by them at any of their branches.
