It falls under particular State Sales Tax/VAT department, which differs marginally for each state. Better to consult state VAT department PRO or helpline for exact information or rules of the same.

Online information is also available over the State VAT site. which state you refer to? Maharashtra?

Even though it shows page expired, but some old information is available on surfing.
Finally, as per my study, I found that it is at discretion of the officer to charge any interest and/or penalty, or give any relief!

PROFESSION TAX ACT, 1975 - Maharashtra Penalty for "Non-payment or late payment of tax." by Enrollee/Employer (Sec. 10) The authority may impose a penalty equal to 10% of the tax due. Interest on late payment of tax. (Sec. 9) The interest for late payment of tax or any additional demand of tax raised in assessment is 1.25% p.m. with effect from 1-7-2004 (2% p.m. up to 30-6-2004.) Note: In addition to this they may also attract penalty of INR 5000 for being non compliant.
