the person him self or herself has to mention male or female.
It will be benificial to such person to select female as in case of female exemption given are higher than male in not only income tax but in other fileds also.
However if he/she has obtained in any other legal document or Id card such catagory then they he/she bound to follow the same.
Mostly it is done on base of the circumstances.

A artifical judicial person can also have a PAN number.
Confirm on the status first whether he's AOP, BOI or HUF..

It is upto that individual's will that may be a decisive factor of recognition as a Male or Female.

scientifically a person by birth will be either a male or a female he cannot be both so his by birth gender should be considered. some people change gender for the own benefits but it is not genuine

Dear, it depends on the person, who wants to apply for the PAN, if she/he documents justifying his/her status then he/she may apply in the status as desired by himself/herself.

It depends the person's wish who apply for PAN. The person himself or herself has to decide and fill accordingly.
