Pan card basically is an identification document. This is the identification number in Income Tax Department's database.
Now a days, other departments are also basing their registrations on PAN. For example : PAN based Service tax and central Excise number.

It's a Permanent Account Number, that is compulsory KYC nowadays, when you go for a account opening. It is mandate by income tax department so that their IT department can track the transaction of any individual or any of any business entity.

PAN stands for Permanent Account Number, and it is a ‘must-have’ document in India, especially if you are earning money and need to pay taxes. Most of the people avail it for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs).
