I Develop Custom accounting Applications..few of my clients are saying we should have Invoice Numbers with Unique Alpha Numeric Series like MTC/2019-20/001

Just wanted to confirm is this procedure is mandatory ? In My Applications i usually start Bill Nos from 1 in Every financial Year

Yrs it may ask for invoice number

I mean is it OK for Invoice Nos like 1, 2, 3, 4 or is it Mandatory that Invoice Number be Like MTC/2019-20/001 ?

The New invoice no. should not match the old one and it should ne unique for example 1/19-20 or MTC01 but the same should not match with old invoice No.
