Writng method of study is more effective than reading method. While you write your brain to hand co ordination occurs. But while you read that thing is not happend and that cause to forget what you learned within a sort span of time
Disclaimer
There may be certain category of student who by single reading will never forget and this suggession is not appliable for them

Thanks very much for this useful write up Vivek Sir.
Agree writing is a good method for preparation but as mentioned by Vivek sir it requires more time. There should be a flexibility in your preparation. I mean one should also learn how to learn quickly.
Try this method for better long term results:
Give the topic a sound and quick reading. later on try to recall the same. If you can successfully recall aroung 60% to 80% portion then you'll save lots of your time and will be benifitted with high confidence. Just give a reading and done.

use more sense of organ for learning...
1. Read :- read silently
2. Hear :- Read loudly so that you can hear
3. Write :- Write it without refering the concepts
4. Pronounce :- Try to re collect what you have learned without looking in to the solutions
