He formed the Rashtriya Janata Dal in 1997, after breaking away from the Janata Dal. In 2004, Yadav was re-elected to his 4 th Lok Sabha term and appointed railway minister in the UPA-led government. Yadav is president of the RJD.

Personal: Yadav is married to Rabri Devi, who was formerly the chief minister of Bihar. They have two sons and seven daughters.
