KOLKATA: The decomposed body of a missing 22-year-old chartered accountancy student was found on Thursday morning. It was dumped in a field off the EM Bypass near Tiljala's Mathpukur in South 24-Parganas.
Manish Agarwal, a resident of Dum Dum, had gone missing since February 21 from a Camac Street office where he was doing his articleship.
Local residents of Tiljala were the first to notice the highly decomposed body on the field and inform Parama Investigation Centre. Preliminary investigations have revealed that Manish was strangled. But police are still in the dark about the motive of the murder.
Manish had completed his graduation from St Xavier's College and was doing articleship at the Camac Street firm. Last Thursday, he had left his office around 5.30 pm. That was the last time he was seen. Since then, he was untraceable and his cellphone was switched off.
Police suspect he had a scheduled appointment that evening and the assailants might have been known to him. "He used to take the Metro on his way back home. But that evening, he went in the opposite direction. One of his friends had seen him near a park, which suggests that he had an appointment," said an investigating officer.
When Manish did not return home till late February 21, his parents went to Shakespeare Sarani police station and lodged a missing complaint. They also met deputy commissioner of police (detective department) Jawed Shamim and CID officers the very next day.But the police failed to get any clue.
On Thursday morning, local residents of Mathpukur woke up to a stench and looking for the source, stumbled upon the body in a bush just off the EM Bypass. The dead person was wearing a black jacket and a pair of blue trousers. Police found a driving licence on the victim, which bore the name Manish Agarwal. Later, Manish's father Shankar identified the body from the shoes and clothes.
"There was a ligature mark round his neck. Prima facie probe revealed that he was strangled. A handkerchief was also found tied around the victim's neck. The condition of the body suggests Manish was killed at least three days ago," said a sleuth.
Family members were clueless about the motive behind the murder. "Manish was second among two brothers and one sister. On that fateful day, his sister spoke to him around
3.30 pm. After that, his cellphone was switched off. Probe revealed that Manish had himself switched it off before leaving office. Police spoke to his colleagues and other friends but none could provide any clue.
"Manish's father Shankar owns a bottling plant in Madhyamgram. Initially, we suspected he had been abducted and we were expecting ransom calls. But no such call came," said Manish's uncle Shankar Chowdhury. "There were a few wounds on his arm and his gold chain was missing," he added.
Police are working on his call details and suspect personal grudge to be the motive behind the murder. "We are looking for every possible aspect and questioning his friends," said South 24-Parganas SP Praveen Kumar. CID sleuths are also probing the murder.
