Jyoti Basu, veteran Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader who was West Bengal chief minister for 23 years and straddled Indian politics for over six decades, died here Sunday after a prolonged illness. He was 95.
'Jyoti Basu is no more,' said party state secretary Biman Bose. Basu had been put on life support system since Friday at AMRI Hospital, where he was admitted on January 1 after complaining for pneumonia. Doctors at AMRI Hospital had stated that Basu's lung, kidney and haemo dynamic system had failed. Besides his heart was also partially affected.
