JNPT Chairman releases informative books on Customs clearance & port management

Two highly informative books for cargo and logistics professionals, published by JBS Academy - Centre for Logistics, Maritime and Management Studies - part of the 57-year-old JBS Group, were released by Mr N. N. Kumar, IRS, Chairman of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), at the Narottam Morarjee Institute of Shipping (NMIS) here on Wednesday, December 10.

"Clearance through Indian Customs" is a comprehensive guide on making Customs clearance simple and increasing the domain knowledge of the reader. The book, whose first and second editions were written by industry doyen Mr Naval H. Mehta, has been re-edited by Mr Samir J. Shah, Chief Mentor and Director of the Academy. The 422-page book, having over 38 chapters, covers every aspect of Customs clearance in India. Written in simple English, with minimal technical jargon, the book makes it easy for a reader to deal with Customs. It is a handy guide for Customs brokers, exporters, importers, ex-im consultants, foreign embassies, students as well as officers of the Department. It is also a useful reference book for those attempting to appear for the Regulation 6 exam for Customs brokers.

Mr Shah, in a brief message on the occasion, pointed out that post-liberalisation, with the mushrooming of facilities like ICDs, FTWZs, etc., there has been pressure on Customs to become more of a facilitator than a regulator, which had increased the importance of gaining domain knowledge of the Department. Customs clearance is a domain industry, he stressed, a serious business that is dynamic and keeps changing.

He dedicated the book to all those working in the Customs department.

The other book, on "Port Management", authored by Mr Mihir Das, with a foreword by Mr S. Hajara, ex-CMD of Shipping Corporation of India, and a preface by Mr M. A. Bhaskarachar, CMD of Kamarajar Port Ltd, gives a 360-degree view in 606 pages. It covers all aspects, from identification of land for a port till the facility is fully operational. The book has been written as a ready guide for new entrants, working professionals and new CEOs who can get all information in one place.

Mr Das, who has more than 30 years of experience in port and shipping logistics, described his book as a gift to the port community and ex-im trade, to excel and add value in their functioning. He said it covered the entire gamut from basic concepts to the complex facets of port operations/infrastructure, including planning, operations, administration, finance, legal issues, environment, safety and security, IT systems, training and development, etc.

Mr N. N. Kumar, in his address, said the books had been brought out at an opportune time, given that there was increased focus on streamlining and easing the processes and procedures of doing business in India, where Customs plays an important role.

With ports a key part of the integrated logistics chain, rather than just being standalone facilities, efficient and expeditious port operations too had gained critical importance, he added.
