Very simple, amt of investment* interest rate per annum.
20000*0.086=1720/- assuming you invested at the beginning of f.y.

Then the Interest will be
=Rs. 20000.00*8.6%*227/365=Rs. 1069.00
owk. i.e. in given eg above NSC will mature on 17.08.2017?
Interest on NSC is computed @ 8.16% p.a compounded annually...
