Can I avail ITC on GST paid on the purchase of gift items for employees? There is an interesting article here https://www.caclubindia.com/articles/itc-on-gifts-under-gst-36124.asp but I'm confused on the conclusion.

It is blocked us 17(5)
but u can claim input like products used by employees in offc such as clothes given to them for offc use etc

No you can't avail as it is a gift, the same has been mentioned under ITC rules.

If i purchase special code dress for employees , i can claim input as it is offc expenses and not a gift for employees
