Hey its great that you had shared so much about your experience. I dont think i'll be able to do that much.
I am working with Barclays Capital in Mumbai. I am into taxation. I am really getting a good exposure as to how a system works. Being in a CA firm for 2 years i did not get any exposure to the ERP environment. Also now i know how the corporate world is all about. As of now i dont regret joining here, because now i have got a brand atleast which i hope will help me in future. I couldnt clear in second group and so i'll be taking leave after 1st week of october for my exams. Right now it is only tax audit, transfer pricing audit, income tax return etc.

" | Hello… Calling every one who is undergoing Industrial Training. I just wanted to start a discussion on our experiences in I.T. It would be interesting to know what different exposures each one of us is getting in various industries/companies. I am placed in Hindalco Industries Limited, Hirakud Aluminium Smelter, Orissa. Since it is a plant, the main issues here are costing, financial management, Excise, VAT etc etc.. It uses Oracle 11i as ERP package. There are no final accounts prepared. Only a Trial Balance is prepared at the end of each month that is sent to the head office. There is cost audit, tax audit quarterly internal audit. There are 3 Chartered Accountants in the accounts department. My employer is the department head. At the basic level I came to know about a lot of corporate culture, company policies (also their loop holes!!), the difference between plant and head office culture. I think its good if one has decided that he would go for a service post qualification. Getting to work in an ERP environment is advantageous I believe. And understanding all processes in the plant is a Herculean task!!! The theoretical knowledge which I have is like tip of the iceberg!!! At the professional exposure level, I am not quite happy. What I‘ve felt is that people were not quite sure how to treat me. And my passing of CA Finals in May 2008 has made it worse probably. I am the first trainee from CA fraternity and the only one at present.( they have proper training programmes for MBAs and Engineering trainees) What I want is to get a holistic picture of how a manufacturing plant works, what are the internal controls in various sections of the plant. What is the role of the accounts department in the various management decisions? (capital budgeting etc, you know). What are the various government regulations and norms complied with? (including AS). But my employer thinks differently. He wants me to work on a project which is of some usefulness to the organization. That is concentrate on one area (some pending case which has been left untouched for years) and go deep into its analysis. That’s fine. But again no body has time to give me a clear broader picture of what is the system and internal control like. Other employees’ knowledge is only limited to that window of the package which they work on. So forget about analysis, I don’t even get a feel of what exactly is the system!!! Another funny thing that I’ve noticed is that when I go the other departments, they do not know how much importance is to be given to me. Though I am a CA, my designation is a trainee!!! People over here say that even if you don’t learn many things, the brand name of Hindalco will do the trick for you when you go to other similar manufacturing companies. Well, that ‘s what with me. It’s been three months only. I am still hopeful. Please share your experiences openly in details. I feel it will also helpful for those intending to pursue I.T. Thanks. | " |

Hi all
I am Apprentice Trainee (C.S.) in Taparia Tools Ltd, Nashik. First Would congratulate the person who took such an initiative. Taparia Tools Ltd. has its Registered Office as well as plant in the same premises therefore I am getting exposure to both Head Office as well as plant. The Finance Dept.(where I am working) is the biggest and most important Dept. since it is pivotal to alll the operations and Depts. Being a CS initially I was given secretarial and legal works but due to my interest in Fin. & Accounts I got to do some tasks in that area as well like TDS. FBT, Investments and Costing. As my friend said costing is the most important function in manufacturing concerns so is the case over here.the company is about to implement SAP therefore I am getting a comprehensive knowledge of system and processes. Presently we are preparing the flowcharts for every function for the Implementation Agency (CMC is the Implementation Agency)(CMC is a subsidiary of TCS).
There is a lot to write but I think much is enough for one go.

@ Pawan
Its a good Topic that you have started,
U need to realize one thing, when u work in a big organization u cannot expect to know everything thats been done there, unlike the small Audit firm where u might have done your articleship.
The idea is to specialize in one particular process that you might be doing . Its only over a period of time that you will be in a position to understand the Big picture in your organization.
Its only natural for someone like you wanting to know whats happening at the Macro level, but have patience and in time you will know all you need to know. Remember that u cannot do all the processes that your skill set allows you to do.

Hi pawan
I guess you are right. Many a times this thing frustrates me that why i am not doing all those things which I can do, but then as you said, I should be focussed towards what I should really need to do.
Aspirations are endless but concentrated efforts can bring them trueone day but one by one.
