in which size of firm one should do articleship

Articleship 1709 views 6 replies

Respected Sir/Ma'am,
With due respect I beg to say that I am a student who has recently appeared in IPCE May 2011. I will join a CA firm for my articleship training after the results. Would you please tell me the merits and demerits of joining a 'Big CA firm with more work' or 'a small CA firm with lesser work.'

medium size firms r good option, because here you will have enough learning as well as enough time for study- my personal opinion

Agreed with Aditya. Also you can join top big firms (other than big4 firms). Ex. Brahmayya & Co.

Mid size firm r best.......according to me

1. Small size firm: Never go for a small size firm unless you know personally someone there and can work directly under the partner in the specific area which you like or want to do a career in. For eg, if you plan to do a career in Indirect taxes, it is best to work in a small firm thats only into IDT and then you can gain good exposure from working with the active partners.

2. Middle size firm: This is good for getting average exposure to more than a few areas. The only advantage a middle size firm has over a big4 is that you get exposure to more than one area.

3. Big4 firms: This is the best option coz although there is a demerit that you may be stuck in only one area (stat and tax audit) for your entire articleship, there are several merits such as exposure to professional working environment of top companies (most top companies have big4 firms as their auditors), in depth analysis of working and business processes of companies, contacts with top management helps in good networking. The whole experience is way different from mid sized firms.

But it is a big struggle coz you wont get more than 4 months leave for CA exams and you will have to give up your social life if you want to get the best out of the big4 experience. It is definitely worth it. Later on, a big4 articleship on your CV and the experience it gives places you MILES ahead of your other friends and classmates.

from the learning point of view:-

Join a Mid sized firm! if u join a big firm u vil b stuck in a single department.!

moreover in big firms u vil get to do vouching of big companies but u vil nt b given the finallisation work of preparing the report!

From the point of view of ur career:-

If u want to do a job , go for a big firm!

If practice, then a mid size firm!

All the best!!

Disha

Sorry but I think it is totally untrue to say that in big firms u vil get to do vouching of big companies but u vil nt b given the finallisation work of preparing the report!

i and my colleague articles have not only done finalisation work of several companies but have also led entire audits of significantly sized companies with a team.

Also, in big4 firms, vouching is not a crucial audit procedure. Vouching is a major activity in small firms but in big4s it is not done in as much volume and it does not have that much importance. No one makes you just do vouching in big4 firms
